Attempting the great

"For what purpose humanity is there should not even concern us: why you are there, that you should ask yourself: and if you have no ready answer, then set yourself goals, high and noble goals, and perish in pursuit of them! I know of no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and the impossible..." -Nietzsche

I can certainly empathize with that - my academic and business experiences have been so exclusively deadline- and repercussion-driven that it's like a giant, white, intimidating piece of paper with no edges when there's not a due date for a project!

Sometimes, I feel like I'm not involved in anything except tasks where someone is waiting at the other end, tapping their foot and checking their watch...

Did someone say quantity over quality?

As I'm mulling this over, I think that one of the barriers for me to complete a personal project is often a bit of anxiety about the finished product - I put sooo much of myself into everything that maybe a deadline is good to keep me from worrying about the end, and enough to motivate me to simply get to the end in the first place.

But then again, 'fun' is supposed to be just that - fun... And when I try giving myself deadlines, the rest of me isn't fooled one bit :)

For a long time, one of my goals has been to start painting again. What a challenge! I think I may revert to fingerpainting - there's little that is more fun than that!

But I can't imagine anything greater, and sometimes more of a challenge, than creating a life for one's self...
